1. Irishmen has major influence/ concentration in NY and Boston in late 19th century, that's the reason why you see
Gangs of New York.
Late on Italians(most from Southern poor agricultural part of Italy) came to NY and the composition got shfited.
NY, for long time, its city council was controlled by the Irish Americans. Check the history of Tamny Hall, the notorious one. Then you see the answers.
Then Italians challenged Irish political machine and LaGuardia took control of the corrupted city council in 1920s(not sure the exact time, might be 1930s) and started some famous political reform.
There is one NY airport called LaGuardia--named after him.
Then you see another famous Italian American as the mayor of NY-- he is famous because of 9-11. I do not need to mention the name, right?? hehe.
2. Chicago always have a shifting composition, Irishmen might be high for some time, but late wave of immigration changed the structure. I saw many Polish/Russian Americans there too.
it is important to POINT OUT FAIRLY THAT all ethnical groups have MAFIA, THE IRISH, THE ITALIANS, and THE CHINESE.
Do not look down upon other ethnic groups. Human beings are sinners by nature and there is no difference among WASPs, Chinese, Irish, Italians in that...
Italians are still stereotyped with mafia because of media efforts like Godfather and some famous congressional investigation in 1960s.
3. Actually if you really explored the history of US, Irishmen have high concentration in main east cities and mid-west (Kansas, Missouri, etc, too), esp, those agricultural states.
4. Jews are concentrated in large cities. There are still discriminations against them esp, in poor and low urbanized areas. Personally I believe that they contributed a lot to US, and they are the chosen people by God.
in academia, more than half of the professors might have Jewish blood in vein. That's also the reason why they are most vocal in civil rights movement in 1960s.
5. The US history is a history of non-voluntary melting process. It is a history of discrimination, division, and then reconciliation and inter-marriage.
Finally, we see what we now called Americans---- might be 1/8 english, 1/8 scot, 1/8 irish, 1/8 Asian, 1/8 Latino, 1/8 German, 1/8 Italian, 1/8 Jew and 1/8 of all kinds of mixture..
In America.
differences / and tolernance of differences make us strong.
it is not genetic purity, but its social system makes it the "city on the hill" and "beacon to the mankind".
Deeply, the political structure is Anglo-Saxon/Roman mixture.
And culturally, it is Anglo-Saxon/ Germanic at the root.
A tip for you: George Bush Jr., is a German American....
