About 3 or 4 years ago I went to Nanjing for a business trip with my "bodyguard" (LP). As I was checking in hotel for two persons in the same room, the hotel lady asked me what was the relationship between two of us. I told them we were husband and wife and showed her our passports with the same last name. She said that was not good enough. She wanted me to show her our Marriage Certificate. My goodness I never thought about having that Certificate with us when traveling and honestly I even don't know where we put it at home. I said to the hotel manager:"Look, it looks like we have to find another hotel." She said: "Be my guest. Any hotel you go in Nanjing, you will be asked for the same certificate to show the relation between a male and female. This is the Rule in Jiangsu Province." So I had to call in the president of the Chinese company which we do business for many years to verify we were real H and W. The ironic thing was due to jetlag I didn't sleep much so I went to lobby for some reading. I noticed some young girls from Karaoke hall went to several hotel rooms after midnight!! I guess it is "out of sight, out of mind." I heard this rule was gone now.
Mind you another thing. If you and your LP are buying an apt. as joint tenet in Shanghai, your marriage certificated is needed!!!
