Is Inflation Really So Low?

April 12: Uncle Sam says the official inflation rate is somewhere in the vicinity of 3%-3.5% per year. We don't buy it, and we don't think you should, either.
We don't know that we'd label either silver or gold as basic raw materials, but they are used for a number of different industrial purposes, including, of course, jewelry. Silver is at a 22-year high of $12.08 per troy ounce and has nearly tripled in price since the beginning of 2003. Copper, which is definitely a basic material, has increased fourfold in price over the same period.
Orange juice costs about 70% more than it did a little more than three years ago. Crude oil has more than doubled in price per barrel during that time span, while sugar has more than tripled.
The 10-year Treasury note is up roughly one-half percentage point over the past few weeks and is only a hair or two away from 5%.
If these are not inflationary signals, then we don't know inflationary signals.
Economics consultant Walter J. Williams states that the "methodologies employed to create the widely followed series such as GDP, CPI, the employment numbers, all have biases built into them that result in overstating economic growth and understating inflation."
This is startling: "Real unemployment right now -- figured the way that the average person thinks of unemployment, meaning figured the way it was estimated back during the Great Depression -- is running about 12%. Real CPI is running at about 8%. And the real GDP is probably in contraction."
These are scary numbers from Williams, but he thinks the average American would say "they seem reasonable." How about you?
